Generally, the horizontal boring mill is commonly used for the building of machines. Characteristically, the drilling and milling work can be done on a horizontally clamped in workpiece. A movable column is used to carry the spindle headstock with the workpiece receptacle. Operation and feeding is done over the spindle headstock. The workpiece receptacle can host a whole row of cutting tools including drills, drilling rod, milling shafts and turning tools.

Therefore, the tool holder is standardised and generally equipped with a morse taper. Horizontal boring mills now also have the possibility to switch tools using CNC technology. The machining table (clamping table) contains the possibility to clamp in the workpiece using clamping screws or other apparatuses. The open construction allows for very large workpeices to be processed. These machines can be up to 10 metres high and contain a large mounting surface. The machine casing is very robust and, like the column, can be used to host the spindle stock. The mounting table can be adjusted with the different axles and have a fixed position. Nowadays, most machines are CNC-operated and this ensures efficient operation.
